Description
The 絵本鷹かがみ (Ehon Taka Kagami) is almost entirely comprised of elegant illustrations with little text. Each of the woodblock prints is hand-printed on the page so there may be some variation in depth of color from one book to another. Kyōsai's prints depict the handling, training, and hunting of goshawks, the favorite bird of Japanese falconers. The drawings are unmistakably by a man who knew his way around hawks - his birds have personalities and attitudes. A number of different editions were printed over a period of time in the late 19th century, and different color bindings were used, but all were sewn paper.
Notes
The paper used for the printing of some of the books was often impregnated with mica flecks and shimmers faintly. There appears to be at least three different editions, a three-volume edition that is bound in green paper, and two other five-volume editions. One is bound in yellow paper and another is bound in red. The yellow bound edition is the most common and the green bound edition the oldest, with the green bound being dated ca. 1863 and the yellow edition as late as the Meiji 12 (1880). The Ehon Taka Kagami was reprinted by Phillip Glasier in the late 1960s.
